Culture & Cocktails: Spiritualism With Spirits

Enjoy a drink and have a think! At Culture & Cocktails, a new lecture program at the Miller House Museum, we tackle a topic with the help of some liquid fortitude!
For "Spiritualism with Spirits," WCHS Executive Director Stefanie Basalik will be exploring the rise of the Spiritualist movement in the years following World War I. See how the Oujia Board rose to prominence, learn about the famous people who supported (and practiced!) spiritualist practices, and learn about why the movement became so popular in the years after the war.

Stefanie's lecture will be paired with a refreshing watermelon-flavored adult beverage inspired by one of the era's most famous spiritualists and authors: Arthur Conan Doyle, the creator of Sherlock Holmes!

HARC Hike For Hunger & Hope

HARC Hike for Hunger & Hope is a non-competitive fundraising event open to all ages. This fully supported hike on the beautiful C&O Canal towpath features 4 K (2.5 miles), 10 K (6.2 miles), and half marathon (13.2 miles) hikes, to include everyone from casual to serious hikers. You can look forward to snacks, water & Gatorade refills along the way. All hikes will be along the C&O Canal in Maryland and will end at the beautiful Shepherd Springs Retreat Center with a very short hike through the woods. All hikes will end at our “Celebration” pavilion where participants can relax and enjoy a delicious lunch and friendships.

United Way Summer Lead and Learn

United Way’s Summer Lead and Learn is a program designed to introduce Washington County middle school students to local opportunities, including post-high school education facilities (colleges and trades), community service organizations and needs, and businesses that provide great career opportunities right here in Washington County. We will be highlighting the four pillars of our local United Way; education, financial stability, health, and basic needs by visiting a variety of organizations throughout the program. We will start the week with team building at Cedar Ridge Adventures ropes course and personality assessment and leadership development with a local business coach. We will use these team building and leadership activities throughout the program to demonstrate how each individual can impact our local community for the good.The program runs June 19 through June 30. Participants will meet each day at UWWC's office by 8:45 a.m. From there, they will visit destinations throughout Washington County.
